Magic Breakfast: The Most Important Meal Of The Day

Posted: March 27, 2015

Carmel McConnell set up Magic Breakfast to provide free breakfasts to children who would otherwise start the day hungry. After speaking to teachers, Carmel found that many of them would bring breakfast foods from home, as the hungry children were unable to concentrate. Many children were being told they were naughty, but really all they craved was a good breakfast. Magic Breakfast believes that no child’s education should suffer due to a lack of breakfast. It endeavours to provide fuel for learning to thousands of school children across the UK.

12 years ago, Magic Breakfast was providing free breakfasts to 16 schools; now, it supplies 430 schools with delicious and nutritious breakfasts each morning. Determined to help out, we started supplying Magic Breakfast with our bagels in 2009. We created our own Magic Bagels, made with a naturally protein-rich flour, and they are a hit with the school children! In 2014, we supplied 1.1 million Magic Bagels to participating schools, and will be providing approximately 1.6 million bagels this year.

For a lot of children, their school dinner was the only hot food they would eat all day, but the breakfast clubs have made a massive difference. Teachers have reported increased attendance and improved concentration in class.

“Since we launched Magic Breakfast in our cuckoo class we have increased the students’ end of term attendance awards by doubling them! This is in addition to the children gaining attendance awards weekly for whole class attendance…  A real feat and tribute to the bagels of Magic Breakfast’
